RESEARCH LINES

CITY, SOCIAL INEQUALITIES, SOCIOCULTURAL MOVEMENTS AND EDUCATION

Encompasses Urban Studies and Sociology of Education. Incorporates approaches focused on investigating the subjective and objective effects of class, race, gender and generational inequalities in cities and educational institutions. Focuses particularly on expressions of structural racism in urban and educational spaces, especially the role of elites and the incorporation of privileges. Includes research on social movements, artistic and cultural practices, public policies, electoral campaigns, urban planning, tourism, heritage, dynamics of land use and occupation, and urban mobility. Studies sports practices, youth cultures, conflicts and social interactions in school spaces, and the impacts of affirmative action in universities. Examines relationships in digital social networks as they affect school and urban relations, with digital and physical dimensions being inseparable in contemporary social life. Research utilizes ethnographic and auto-ethnographic approaches, interviews, life histories, focus groups and surveys, employing analytical software (Survey Monkey, NVivo).

GENDER AND DIVERSITY, CULTURE AND SOCIAL THOUGHT

Encompasses studies on subjectivity, emotions and society. Researches intersectionality among social markers of differentiation (such as gender, sexuality, generation and race). Studies processes of social suffering and illness identified in the context of these markers and their connections with contemporary capitalism dynamics. Investigates feminist epistemologies and methodologies, LGBTQIA+ studies and body studies. Examines the universe of culture as symbolic production, circulation and appropriation in various spheres of power and domains of social life. Seeks knowledge about ethnic-racial manifestations, festivities and religiosities of popular cultures, as well as controversies and tensions of religions in public space. Covers the specific field of policies and literary, cultural and scientific productions, of artistic and intellectual configurations (national and transnational), of the History of Social Sciences and Brazilian Social Thought. Faculty research projects cover the areas: Individual, Subjectivity and Society. Sociology of the Body and Emotions. Sociology of Health and Sexuality. Sociology of Social Markers of Difference. POLITICS, ECONOMY AND SOCIETY

Encompasses topics in Political Sociology, Economic Sociology and Political Economy. Studies the different configurations of contemporary capitalism and the specificities of Brazilian capitalism. Investigates sciences, techniques, technologies and their social dynamics. Analyzes the world of work, including subjective and objective dimensions. Explores the dynamics and expressions of civil society in contemporary times. Incorporates studies on state formation and transformation, democracy, international politics, political behavior and public policies. Researches the impacts of media communication on political processes and inequalities (gender, race, among others) in the political arena. Conducts comparative studies, with special emphasis on Brazil and the rest of Latin America, using quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

VIOLENCE AND SOCIAL CONFLICTS

Encompasses studies on the multiple and diverse manifestations of violence and social conflict in society, exploring their causalities, dynamics and social effects. Analyzes processes of social construction of violence and how they impact social life and its configurations. Discusses criminal dynamics and phenomena constituting illegalisms that, at different scales, compose social relations. Examines from a broad perspective the phenomenon of conflict in everyday and state configurations, addressing problems related to the state, practices of social control and punishment. Comprehends struggles for social rights, recognition and power in social spaces crossed by processes of domination, discrimination and subalternization related to class, gender, race and ethnicity. Houses studies on urban violence and organized crime, analyzing movements of reproduction and transformation of criminal collectives. Discusses the legitimacy of social forms and symbolic systems that, politically and morally, define forms of violence, conflict and crime. Analyzes the processes of morality that structure the symbolic contents that, culturally, affect forms of perception and definition of violence, conflict and crime constitutive of certain societies. Includes conjunctural and comparative analyses, studying the Latin American scenario and other international realities regarding crime and violence. Also interested in research on the social effects of violence and crime for democracies, the exercise of citizenship and the processes of guaranteeing rights and freedoms constitutive of contemporary political systems.
