Education

Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV).

Director of the Laboratory for Social Sciences (LACSO). Since 2005, he has served as the coordinator of the Venezuelan Observatory of Violence, a network that brings together eight Venezuelan universities. He is currently a Visiting Professor at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) in Fortaleza, Brazil.

He has been a guest professor of sociology at Sorbonne Nouvelle University, Paris, France; an Associate Member of Saint Antony’s College at Oxford University, Oxford, United Kingdom; and a Member of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington, DC. He has also taught at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Mexico City.

He served as President of the Venezuelan Sociological Association (AVS), Director of the Latin American Sociological Association (ALAS), and Global Secretary of the International Forum for Social Sciences and Health (IFSSH). He was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Sociological Association (ISA) for two terms, from 1994 to 2002. He also served as Latin America Director of the Small Grants Program of the World Health Organization (WHO) for young researchers in social sciences and tropical diseases.

He has worked as a consultant for the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, the World Bank, the World Health Organization, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and B&S Europe, conducting research and evaluating social programs across nearly all countries in Latin America, as well as in several countries in Asia and Africa.

He is proficient in Spanish, English, French, and Portuguese.

He is the author and editor of 26 books published in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, and has contributed more than 200 peer-reviewed book chapters and scientific articles.
