Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the program accept special student enrollment? What is the application process?

Yes, but only under academic mobility, meaning you must be currently enrolled in a Master’s or Doctoral program at another institution. You must fill out the Special Student Enrollment Request Form (form-cadastro-aluno-especial) and submit it to the Secretariat’s email (posgrads@ufc.br) along with the following documents:

  • Proof of enrollment from your home institution;
  • Undergraduate/Master’s diploma (as applicable);
  • Academic transcript;
  • ID (RG) and CPF.

I was admitted to the Doctoral program and would like to transfer credits from my Master’s. Is this possible?

Yes. You must send the completed and signed request form (available here) to the Secretariat’s email (posgrads@ufc.br), along with your academic transcript and course syllabi.

  • If you completed your Master’s in our program, you only need to submit the form and transcript.
  • Requests will be reviewed by the Coordination and processed by the Secretariat.

I missed the enrollment period. What should I do?

You must regularize your status during the re-enrollment period. Check the academic calendar for deadlines: UFC Academic Calendar.

Under what circumstances can I be dismissed from the program?

  • Failing to enroll (both in the regular and re-enrollment periods);
  • Failing two courses;
  • Not completing your thesis/dissertation within the deadline.

I want to change my advisor. What should I do?

Discuss this with your current advisor, as their approval is required. If agreed, submit the completed and signed advisor change form (available here).

When should I schedule my qualification exam?

Master’s students: By the end of the third semester.

  • Doctoral students: By the end of the fifth semester.
    Coordinate with your advisor to meet the deadline.

Can I take courses at another institution in a different state?

First, contact the desired program to inquire about their mobility procedures. Once approved, notify the PPGS Secretariat and submit proof of mobility so your enrollment status can be updated in SIGAA.

How do I track the credits required to complete my degree?

Check your academic transcript for credit fulfillment.

Master’s students must complete 30 credits:

  • 16 credits in required courses (Sociological Theory I & II, Social Research Methods, Teaching Internship I);
  • 8 credits in activities (Proficiency, Qualification, Dissertation);
  • 6 credits in electives.

Doctoral students must complete 60 credits:

  • 16 credits in required courses (Advanced Topics in Sociological Theory, Advanced Topics in Methodology, Teaching Internship II & III);
  • 14 credits in activities (Proficiency, Qualification, Thesis);
  • 30 credits in electives.

I have a medical condition requiring academic leave. What should I do?

Notify the Secretariat, and we will initiate a process for medical evaluation by CPASE (UFC’s medical board). They will determine if you require:

  • Special academic status (exempt from attendance penalties but still graded); or
  • Full leave of absence (courses paused, resume next semester).

My language proficiency requirement is pending. What now?

Contact the relevant Casa de Cultura Estrangeira (link) to schedule a proficiency test. Submit the approval certificate to the Secretariat once completed.

How do I schedule my qualification exam or defense (thesis/dissertation)?

Two options:

  1. Submit a signed scheduling request form (link) from your advisor;

  2. Have your advisor email the Secretariat with all required details.

After scheduling, email the program:

  • Thesis/dissertation title, abstract, keywords (editable file or in email body);
  • Qualification text (PDF).
    For external committee members, include:
  • Full name, CPF, email;
  • Highest degree and year obtained;
  • Current institution.

I defended my thesis/dissertation. How do I request my diploma?

Follow the steps here: Diploma Request Form.

I need my diploma urgently. What can I do?

After your request is processed by the PRPPG, contact them directly for expedited requests. Provide your case number (obtained from the Secretariat). More info: PRPPG Website.
