About
Luiz Fábio Paiva is a Sociology Professor at the Department of Social Sciences and the Graduate Program in Sociology at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), as well as a researcher at the Laboratory for Violence Studies (LEV). His research focuses on a comprehensive approach to the social effects of crime and violence in urban peripheries of Ceará and the tri-border region between Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. Over the years, he has critically analyzed governance experiences in public security and justice. Currently, he collaborates with the Amazonas Gender Violence Observatory, the research group ILHARGAS (Cities, Policies, and Knowledge in the Amazon), the Laboratory for Research on Migration, Nation, and Borders (LIMINAR), and the Ceará State Public Security Popular Forum.
He coordinated the research project “(In)security on the Border: How Residents of Tabatinga Perceive Danger and Violence in the Amazon Tri-Border (Brazil, Colombia, and Peru)”, funded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) from 2013 to 2017. He is currently developing the research project “The Social Transformations of Crime in Fortaleza”, which examines changes in criminal practices in the capital of Ceará. He also leads the UFC extension project “Traficando Saberes” (Trading Knowledge), which fosters dialogue and knowledge exchange with youth under assisted liberty measures.
Research Interests: Social effects of violence in marginalized communities; Urban violence; Rights violations; Citizenship; Justice and the social construction of suffering.
