Elites in Fortaleza: practices of class, race and gender
Fortaleza is one of the most unequal cities in the world. The social disparities in the city have stimulated many studies on poverty. Notwithstanding, research in the field of urban sociology and anthropology focusing on affluent people are still rare. Our study will focus on the neighborhoods of the upper class in Fortaleza, the districts with the highest indicators of income, education, and longevity in the city, focusing on the practices of sociability, leisure,consumption, and the reproduction of projects of neoliberal individualism. Particularly, we aim to study howthese communities use and appropriate the citys public spaces. Elite-centered approaches have been able to demonstrate the close relationship that poverty and wealth have, by expanding our understanding of the impact unequal access to natural resources and other forms of resources have on people’s opportunities and life trajectories.
