Master’s Program
History
The Master’s Program in Sociology at the Federal University of Ceará originated from the Graduate Program for Social Researchers of the Northeast (PRAPSON). It was accredited by the Federal Council of Education in 1983 and reaccredited in 1989. Initially, the program focused on the theme of Development, but its current concentration area is Sociology.

Selection Process
Admission to the Master’s program occurs annually, with 15 available spots distributed across the four research lines. Applicants must hold a full undergraduate degree in Social Sciences or related fields. Graduates from other fields may also apply, provided they have completed at least three undergraduate or specialization courses in Social Sciences.
Applicants to the Master’s Program in Sociology will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Performance in a knowledge assessment test, as specified in the selection notice;
- Approval of the research proposal and its alignment with the chosen research line;
- Performance in an oral examination;
- Passing an exam in one foreign language (English or French) – non-eliminatory;
- Passing a Portuguese language exam for non-Portuguese-speaking international students;
- Evaluation of academic records and curriculum vitae.
Master’s applicants residing outside the state of Ceará may take the oral examination via videoconference.
About the Program
Master’s students must:
- Complete at least 24 credits in coursework and activities, including:
- 16 credits in mandatory courses,
- 1 credit in Proficiency activity,
- 1 credit in Qualification activity,
- 6 credits in elective courses,
- 6 credits in Dissertation-related activities;
- Demonstrate reading comprehension in one foreign language (English or French);
- Pass Teaching Internship I, in accordance with CAPES Ordinance No. 76/2010;
- Pass the Qualification Exam;
- Successfully present and defend their Master’s Dissertation.
