Call for Applications for the 2027 Master’s and Doctoral Cohorts Now Open

Published at: July 16, 2026 Category: Admission, Doctorate, Master's, News

We are pleased to announce the publication, on SIGAA, of Admission Calls No. 2/2026 and No. 3/2026, concerning the selection process for the 2027 Doctoral and Master’s cohorts of the Graduate Program in Sociology (PPGS), respectively.

This year’s admission process introduces several important changes designed to strengthen graduate students’ active participation in the Program and foster their engagement with its research lines. The main changes include:

  • An increase in the number of positions reserved for affirmative action candidates: seven positions in the Master’s program and six in the Doctoral program, distributed among the following categories: Black candidates (including Pretos and Pardos), Indigenous peoples, Quilombola communities, persons with disabilities, and UFC faculty and staff members.
  • Replacement of the Statement of Purpose with a Graduate Study Engagement Plan as part of the application documents. This new requirement is intended to emphasize applicants’ proposed involvement in the Program’s academic activities, research projects, and laboratories. In addition, research proposals addressing strategic themes identified in the Admission Call and linked to institutional PPGS research projects will receive additional evaluation points.
  • Expansion of the Admissions Committee: each committee will now consist of six faculty members, including one alternate member. The committee will include one representative from each of the Program’s research lines, as well as one external member from outside PPGS. Consequently, the former research-line subcommittees have been discontinued.
  • Reordering of the selection stages: the research proposal evaluation will now constitute the first stage of the selection process, followed by the written examination.
  • New requirements for the research proposal: in addition to identifying the Program’s research line to which the proposal is related, applicants must indicate the relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), describe the expected impactos-tccs of the proposed research (see Impacts of Theses and Dissertations), and include a Declaration of the Use or Non-Use of Artificial Intelligence in preparing the proposal, in accordance with UFC Ordinance No. 39/PRPPG/UFC and Normative Instruction No. 1/2025.
  • A revised written examination based on a more focused reading list that incorporates contemporary debates and emerging epistemological perspectives alongside the classics of social theory.
  • Expansion of the curriculum evaluation scoring system, including recognition of additional academic activities and experiences, as well as the creation of a new category for science communication, outreach, and social impact activities.
  • Greater emphasis on applicants’ academic trajectories: the final ranking score will now be calculated as the arithmetic mean of all stages of the selection process.

Applications will be accepted until September 1, 2026.

The Admission Calls are available below and on the Admissions page, where applicants will also find the electronic application form for submitting the required documentation.
